Charles R Drew University of Medicine and Science’s Division of Cancer Research and Training Hosts Research Journal Club Event

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is a nonprofit, private institution devoted to delivering high-quality medical education and training to a diverse student body. Its mission is rooted in preparing future researchers and healthcare professionals to serve and uplift their communities with compassion, expertise, and cultural awareness. 

In addition to providing high-quality medical education and training, the Division of Cancer Research and Training is deeply committed to conducting innovative research, promoting meaningful community outreach, and fostering engagement across diverse populations. Through its initiatives, the division strives to reduce the burden of cancer and improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities 

The Division buzzed with excitement as it prepared to host its highly anticipated Research Journal Club Event. Led by undergraduate Cancer Research Training interns and American Cancer Society Scholars Benjamin Chen and Ariel Messenger, the gathering highlighted the university’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of cancer researchers.  

Held in LSRNE, S202, and accessible virtually via Microsoft Teams, this hybrid event created a space for researchers, scientists, and students to come together in celebration of innovation, collaboration, and the pursuit of groundbreaking cancer discoveries. Attendees engaged in thoughtful discussions and exchanged insights on the latest advancements and developments in the field.  

Designed to promote and foster critical thinking and open discussion, the Research Journal Club served as a platform for participants to interact with cutting-edge cancer research offering constructive feedback and thoughtful critique to their peers. The event drew faculty members, researchers, and students from various institutions, each united with a passion for cancer research and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in the field. 

Presentations by Ariel Messenger and Benjamin Chen sparked deep conversations around a wide range of topics in cancer research. Their insights guided attendees through emerging findings and challenges in the field, creating a space for meaningful exchange. 

Their enthusiasm and expertise shone throughout the event, reflecting a deep commitment to advancing cancer research. Their leadership was not only impressive it was inspiring. 

The event featured wide-ranging discussions on subjects including novel therapeutic strategies, cancer genetics, and epigenetics. These sessions showcased perspectives and encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration.  

As an empowering platform, the event allowed researchers to educate, inspire, and connect. They shared their work and received constructive feedback. Discussions were informative and lively.  

The Division of Cancer Research and Training at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science continues to advance its mission to reduce the burden of cancer and uplift communities affected by the disease. The Research Journal Club event was a reflection of that mission. 

Judging by the engaging conversations, bright smiles, and enthusiastic feedback from participants, the event was a success. “This was an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest research in cancer biology and to network with colleagues,” said one attendee. “I look forward to future events like this.” 

The event underscored the importance of cultivating a community of scholars, grounded in purpose, support, and a shared vision. As cancer research continues to evolve, events like this play a vital role in shaping its future. They serve not only as forums for exchanging ideas but as spaces where passion meets purpose, contributing to a broader vision of healing and hope.
